One example I can think of is that guy who said ignoring villagers and hitting them with a net makes them move. In the meantime, people who were writing guides were guessing or making up theories and once they were published they got perpetuated. Some game mechanics weren't fully understood when the game came out, and people had to play to discover how they really worked. However, that also means they are being written when people have a limited understanding of the game, and maybe haven't had time to verify everything, so they are going on their best guess, and maybe relying on other information without having verified its accuracy. Most people who do guides try to do them as quickly as possible when the game comes out, because that's when they are going to get the most use, which makes sense. One is that there are an awful lot of things in the game people want info about, and a lot of items that need information (like feng shui colours, and which furniture is which colour, and does recolouring with Cyrus affect furniture colour for feng shui, and what does feng shui actually do anyway). The ACNL Guide also acts as a checklist, which is awesome. That way you can compare the information and see if there are any inconsistencies. So.for reliable info, I recommend using a combination of nookipedia, and animalcrossingwikia, and maybe the ACNL Guide App (free from the play store on mobile devices). But, if my math was right, 58/59 species found in the encyclopedia should be when he appears for the silver bug badge. I've also read sources saying that if a player TT's too much, he may not appear for a while, so that could also be the issue at hand. Some someone could have easily screwed up their math on it. So, for the Silver Bug Badge (Insect Encyclopedia), it says to fill up 80% of your encyclopedia. The problem with some things, like the Badge examples you gave, is that the game looks at percentage. I tend to use the ACNL Guide app on my phone, because it's pretty darn good, but it also omits some details, like additional info on events. Like someone else said, Prima's well known for being pretty off with their information too. The entire Harmonious Theme list was put until Antique, I believe, and vice versa. Most notable is that they completely switched around furniture requirements for Theme Challenges. Thonky, I've noticed, has a lot of good information, but also has a LOT of bad information. So what's going on? is there a source that has 100% legit, correct information on this game? They all say i need to catch 58 bug species to get the silver badge, but I have 61 species right now and havn't met Phineas to give me the silver badge. one tells me i need to catch 1000 sea creatures to get gold, the other tells me 5,000. One tells me i need to shoot down 5000 balloons to get gold, the other tells me only 200. These are three different sources about getting the badges from Phineas. I've seen guides online that contradict the official book and be correct, or offer more details than the book does. Even the official prima game guide seems to leave some stuff out entirely or be inaccurate about certain things (like the snowman building guide or flower hybrid guide). I've never played a game where the tips, tricks, and game guides are so inconsistent between sources as New Leaf.
