I spent 16 years in the Monroe Kiwanis Club and the last seven years in the Adrian Kiwanis Club. I have been a Kiwanian for almost 23 years now. But really, it was me who was truly blessed with his friendship. DY always thanked me for my calls, my visits and he often thanked me for being his friend. Unfortunately, we lost DY on July 6 just two months shy of his 100th birthday. DY was also one of the most patriotic people I know, often wearing an American flag on his lapel (and giving them away). Listening to him describe the love of his family and his fulfilling dental career, I always got the feeling his was a life well lived. Army meeting his beloved wife, Lela enjoying their family life together and sharing immense pride in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After all, he had 99 years of material! He told me about growing up during the Depression attending Albion College and Northwestern University Dental School his time as a captain in the U.S. Listening to DY tell his life stories was interesting, informative, entertaining and always endearing. My good friend, Rusty Davis, made DY feel very welcome at the battlefield. I even took DY to lunch in Monroe and to the famous River Raisin Battlefield National Park he had always heard about but had never visited. DY never ate a lot, but he always made room for desserts. We also spent many lunches at his house with his caretaker, Sharon, and often with Pastor Olivia, Travis Havens, Emily Pickney, or his other friends in tow. Other lunch venues included the Asian/Chinese Buffet, Red Lobster, Taco Tuesdays at the Highland Inn, and summertime at the Devils Lake Yacht Club. But we were excited to learn recently that it will re-open soon. One of our favorite pastimes was lunch together at the Governor Croswell Tea Room in downtown Adrian until it closed during COVID. He had quite a social life for someone in their 90s. He was the busiest “nonagenarian” I know.
